Course overview

  • Duration: 6 months, in-person weekends plus home practice.

Monthly structure

  • Month 1: Foundations & safety

    • History and cosmology of the sweat lodge.

    • Safety, contraindications, and aftercare.

    • One sweat lodge focused on protection, humility, and prayer.

  • Month 2: Fire module

    • Working with the fire: tending, respect, protocols.

    • Songs, prayers, and offerings to the fire.

    • One or two sweat lodges focused on purification and courage.

  • Month 3: Water module

    • Use of water in lodge, on the stones, in prayer.

    • Learning to balance intensity with care and cooling.

    • One or two sweat lodges focused on emotional healing and grief.

  • Month 4: Air module

    • Working with breath, silence, and sound in ceremony.

    • Responsibility of spoken word and prayer in the lodge.

    • One or two sweat lodges focused on prayer, clarity, and vision.

  • Month 5: Earth module

    • Building and caring for the lodge and site; altars and offerings.embracingshamanism

    • Grounding practices, walking on the land, listening to place.

    • One or two sweat lodges focused on stability, roots, and responsibility.

  • Month 6: Fasting, silence & integration

    • One weekend of dry fasting (or adapted fast) and silent meditation, held and supervised.

    • Time in nature alone to listen and receive vision.

    • Closing sweat lodge(s) to integrate, give thanks, and set commitments.

    • Sharing circle, next steps, and ongoing mentorship.

Ongoing elements

  • Many sweat lodges across the 6 months, with students rotating helper roles.4dsociety+1

  • One‑to‑one mentoring check‑ins (e.g., every 4–6 weeks).

Sliding scale pricing idea

For example, for a 6‑month training you could create three tiers inspired by sliding‑scale models used in healing and spiritual work.kendracoupland+2

  • Supporter (higher income / resourced)

    • Pays full rate plus supports concessions.

    • For people with stable income, savings, and access to holidays.

  • Standard (middle income)

    • Covers basic costs and fair payment for teachers.

    • For people who can meet bills but have limited extra.

  • Supported (concession)

    • Reduced rate for low income, carers, students, or those in financial hardship.

    • Limited places, sometimes combined with work‑exchange.
