“The Sweat Lodge is a significant part of many indigenous cultures and has been used for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, including physical healing, spiritual purification, and communal bonding. The structure of the Sweat Lodge typically consists of a dome-shaped or circular structure made of natural materials such as tree branches, saplings, or willow poles. The frame is then covered with blankets, hides, or other materials to create a sealed space.”
🌿 What is a Temazcal (Sweat Lodge)?
A Temazcal, also known as a Sweat Lodge, is an ancestral ceremonial space found in many Indigenous cultures of the Americas. It is traditionally understood as a place of detox, purification, renewal, and energetic rebalancing, symbolising a return to the womb of Mother Earth.
The Ceremonial Process
The ceremony begins with the lighting of a sacred fire, where volcanic stones are heated with care and intention. When ready, the stones are brought into the lodge and placed at the centre. Participants sit in a circle around the stones, and water infused with prayers and herbs is gently poured over them, creating steam and heat.
The Four Doors of the Temazcal
Inside the temazcal, the ceremony unfolds in four ceremonial rounds, known as “doors.” Each door offers space for physical, emotional, and energetic detox, release, reflection, and gratitude. Between each door, the lodge is opened to allow rest, hydration, and fresh air. Participants are always invited to listen to their bodies and move at their own pace.
At Inti and Waira House, our temazcales are guided with care, responsibility, and respect by experienced facilitators working in connection with ancestral lineages. The ceremony may include silence, prayer, song, and presence, creating a grounded and supportive space for deep inner work.
“Many participants describe the temazcal as a powerful detox from the noise and pressures of modern life, often accompanied by a sense of clarity, lightness, and renewed energy in the days following the ceremony. While each experience is unique, the feeling of energetic recharge and reconnection is commonly shared.”
Each temazcal is held with a clear intention — such as grounding, introspection, renewal, or celebration of life cycles — always honouring the cultural origins and protocols of the traditions we work with.
The temazcal is approached not as something to “push through,” but as a sacred space to listen, release, and rebalance — supporting a deeper connection with self, community, nature, and the living wisdom of the Earth.

Safety, Care & Personal Choice
At Inti and Waira House, the Temazcal (Sweat Lodge) is guided with care, respect, and responsibility. Creating a safe and supportive ceremonial space is a core part of how we work.
Participation in the temazcal is always by choice. You are invited to listen to your body and honour your own limits throughout the ceremony. Resting, stepping out, or choosing not to continue at any point is fully respected and supported.
The ceremony unfolds in four doors, with regular moments to pause, hydrate, and breathe fresh air. This rhythm allows the detox experience to be held gently and consciously, rather than pushed or forced.
Our facilitators are experienced in holding ceremonial space and are attentive to the needs of the group. We encourage open communication and invite participants to share any concerns or needs before the ceremony begins.
The temazcal is offered as a non-medical, experiential detox and renewal practice — a space to reconnect, release, and rebalance. Many people describe feeling lighter and more energised after the ceremony, particularly in the days that follow.
Above all, we honour the temazcal as a sacred space where care, consent, and presence are essential parts of the journey.
“Testimonial
I have been attending their events for nearly 10 years. It is a blessing having them so close to London, for busy people like me I wouldn’t be able to attend I those spiritual sessions if I didn’t have Init & Waira House. But most importantly, the people who run it do it from the heart, they are genuinely knowledgeable people whom main concern is the well being of the attendees.”

The Sweat Lodge ceremony can help to decrease fears and phobias by providing a safe and controlled environment in which to confront and overcome these challenges. By participating in the ceremony and working through their fears in a supportive setting, individuals can build confidence and resilience, and begin to move past limiting beliefs and emotional patterns.
“Mental Healing-
The mental healing aspect of the Sweat Lodge ceremony is an important part of its tradition. The intense heat and physical discomfort of the experience can help to focus the mind and create a state of mental clarity and focus. This can be particularly valuable for people who struggle with distractions, anxiety, or negative thought patterns.”
“Emotional Benefits
The symbolic regression to the mother’s womb and reconnection with the inner child can create a sense of safety and security, which can be particularly beneficial for those who have experienced trauma or emotional distress.
The opportunity to express deep feelings in a sacred and supportive environment can also be valuable for emotional healing. By purifying the “emotional waters,” or releasing stagnant emotions, participants can begin to let go of negative patterns and experiences that may have been holding them back. This can be a powerful step toward deeper healing and greater emotional wellbeing.
”
“Spiritual Healing
The Sweat Lodge ceremony can offer a powerful opportunity for introspection and spiritual connection. The use of the four elements of nature - fire, water, air, and earth - is a central aspect of many indigenous traditions, and can help to create a sense of unity with the natural world. Through meditation, singing, and prayer, participants in the Sweat Lodge ceremony can cultivate a deeper sense of connection to their inner selves and to the larger spiritual community. This can be particularly valuable for people who are seeking a sense of purpose or direction in their lives, or who are looking to deepen their spiritual practice.”
“ Physical Effects Commonly Experienced in a Temazcal (Sweat Lodge)
The Temazcal (Sweat Lodge) is often experienced as a powerful physical and energetic detox, created through heat, steam, prayer, and deep presence. While each body responds differently, many participants describe a range of felt physical effects during and after the ceremony.
The warmth and humidity of the temazcal encourage deep sweating, which many people experience as a natural way to release physical tension and heaviness. This process is often described as a detox from the accumulation of stress and overstimulation of modern life, rather than a medical intervention.”
